SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

Adults with bipolar disorder have mood swings involving episodes of mania (extreme ups) and depression (extreme downs). These intense moods quickly change from one extreme to another in a cyclical fashion.

Bipolar disorder disrupts normal daily functions and often involves risky or dangerous behavior. However with proper diagnosis and treatment, people diagnosed with bipolar can be fully functional and lead normal lives.

HERE ARE SOME SIGNS & SYMPTOMS EXPERIENCED DURING EACH EPISODE:

      DURING AN EPISODE OF MANIA:
           Sleeping very little
           Talkative
           Impulsive risky sex can occur
; Taking on too many projects
           Racing thoughts
Spending sprees or impulsive financial decisions

      DURING AN EPISODE OF DEPRESSION:
Feeling hopeless, empty, sad, down, or bored
           Tired all the time
           Overeating and weight gain
           Thoughts of death and suicide
           Sleeping too much
Previous interests are no longer enjoyable

THERE ARE SEVERAL CATEGORIES OF BIPOLAR DISORDER:

BIPOLAR I: Mood episodes of mania and depression are severe and extreme and often involves risky behavior

BIPOLAR II: Mood episodes of mania are milder but cycle with episodes of severe depression

CYLOTHYMIC: Mild mood episodes of mania and depression in short, brief cycles

MIXED: Mood episodes of mania and depression are experienced simultaneously

RAPID-CYCLING: Mood episodes of mania and depression that cycle rapidly, sometimes people will even experience more than one episode a week
